Dear Parents and Students,
I am excited about this Spring Semester. We are already moving along at our usual busy 6th grade pace. Students have chosen their Science Fair projects. Packets including due dates for the project went home last week. The final date for all materials to be in is February 17th, but there will be multiple due dates along the way to ensure that students are working from now until then.
Another thing that students should be working on throughout this entire semester is reading independently. Each month, I send home a Reading Log. Students are expected to read 300 minutes or more per month. This will count for approximately 1/4 of students' Reading grade. Typically, students are given about 40 minutes per week to read independently in class. Parents/guardians will need to sign Reading Logs at the end of each month. Currently, as a class, we are reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. This Newbery Medal winning verse novel is set in Oklahoma during the 1930s. Students are keeping Reading Journals about the book that will be collected for grading periodically throughout our reading. The first collection date is this Friday, January 14th.
As usual, I will be sending home a weekly newsletter about our class to keep you informed of our activities and upcoming events. Please feel free to contact me via phone (721-4205), email (genevav@gmail.com), or this blog. I am typically available to meet with you between 8:15 and 8:30 or 3:15 and 4:00, or by appointment.
